Who is Drake House named after?
Sir Francis Drake was a sea captain of the Elizabethan era. He was also active in politics and received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth I in 1581. His campaign against the Spanish Armada made him a hero to the English but a terror to the Spaniards to whom he was known as El Draque, 'Draque' being the Spanish pronunciation of 'Drake'. In Latin his name translates as Franciscus Draco ('Francis the Dragon').
He is probably most famous for leading the first English circumnavigation of the world, from 1577 to 1580. In 1973 a full-size replica of the ship he used for this journey, also called the Golden Hinde, was built by traditional handcraft in Appledore, North Devon.
Sir Francis Drake was born in Tavistock, Devon, estimated to have been in 1544. He died of dysentery in January 1596.

His motto, 'thus great things arise from small', is thought to reflect his humble upbringings in Devon and serves as inspiration to us all.
