Modern Languages

All students begin French and Spanish in Year 7 and have the opportunity to continue these languages until at least the end of Year 9.  They are encouraged to choose one or both languages as a GCSE Option in Years 10 and 11.

We believe that all students can benefit from the study of a Modern Foreign Language and are given the opportunity to do so through a wide variety of proven teaching and learning techniques.  This includes the use of ICT and the active use of the target language as much as possible.  Courses are carefully planned and regularly reviewed, integrating the language and the culture to encourage understanding and wider appreciation for a fast changing world in which aptitude in a language is playing an increasingly important role.  The department runs a few residential trips which include a 5 day residential trip to either Normandy in France or Barcelona for year 8 pupils, and a trip to Madrid for 4 days over February half term.
