Design and Technology is a subject which has evolved from more traditional beginnings.  It includes the areas of CADCAM (Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture) Control, Electronics, Food, Graphics, ICT, Product Design, and Textiles.

The development in the use of CADCAM means that students can now design articles using specialist software, set up machine parameters and then see their ideas cut out with laser cutters.  Students will therefore experience both hand-made and mass production methods of manufacturing.

During Key Stage 3, students will experience working in all of the areas, learning new skills and incorporating them into design and make projects.  The work is quite demanding as they will be expected to utilise skills and knowledge from other areas of the curriculum as design projects develop.

They will be assessed on their ability to:-

• gather and use information
• sketch and draw design ideas
• model
• plan and organise their making activity
• use tools and equipment in a safe, controlled and accurate manner
• evaluate their outcomes

Towards the end of Key Stage 3 they will opt to specialise in one focus area.

In Key Stage 4, students cam choose to follow the GCSE Design and Technology course of their choice.
