U15 girls reach ND Schools football final!

Written by Mr King, PE Technician

On the 7th March the U15 (year 9 & 10) Park girls football team took part in a North Devon schools tournament with the aim to try and qualify for next round Devon tournament in Newton Abbot. The team was laser focused beforehand and knew that it was not enough just to play well, they needed to get the right results to go through.

Park faced Pilton in their first game which finished 0 – 0. If it was not for four unbelievable saves from the Pilton goalkeeper Park would have won convincingly. An okay start and something to definitely build on.

Braunton up next, although Park’s build up play was scintillating at times the girls just couldn’t find the end product to match. Another 0 – 0 draw. After a disappointing result agansint Braunton the tournament was out of our hands and as the girls watched the remaining fixtures they prayed that other results would go in their favour..which they did.

Approaching the final group game against Ilfracombe Park now knew that anything less than a 4 – 0 win would see Park drop out of the competition. With no hesitation the girls scored an incredible 7 against Ilfracombe, topping their group and taking Park into the final against Bideford.

It was not an underestimation that Bideofrd would be the hardest challenge yet, they played very physical, which at times bested Park’s technical footballers. However Park stood up to the challenge, scoring first. Bideford responded making it 1 – 1. As fatigue set in the second half Park just couldn’t put together the final passes that would seal them the win. Then Bideford scored another. Full time result Bideford 2 – 1 Park

To the girls’ surprise this wouldn’t be the end of the Devon competition dream. Bideford unfortunately could not play the finals in Newton Abbot on the 14th March so Park went through as they finished second place. Tears turned to smiles as the girls celebrated and looked forward to the next round.

Well done all involved, every player played their part in a great afternoon for Park girls football.
